Welcome to TeachFlix

Welcome to the world of TeachFlix, where education meets entertainment

Hello! My name is Alexandra Burke. I am a high school science educator of 6 years and mom to a kindergartener, a 2-year-old, and a soon-to-be newborn. I have an undergrad in biology and a Master's in Teaching. This blog combines two of my loves in life: education and cinema. Movies and TV shows can do an amazing job at bringing education to life, from watching history play out in real-time to experiencing unbelievable science fiction being brought to life.

My goal for this site is to review and recommend educational and non-educational content and relate it back to the classroom. There are so many wonderful tools out there for teachers to use that need to be taken advantage of. Sometimes, a silly cartoon explaining why people look different can make all the difference (and who doesn't need a little break day every now and then). This is not limited to teachers! Homeschoolers or just parents who are interested in making screen time more meaningful can use these resources as well!

Movies

Some movies truly stand the test of time. I am here to tell you which ones are worth the watch and which ones are not. I have reviewed numerous movies in numerous genres and am prepared to give you the truth. Movies have been put into several categories:

  • age

  • subject

  • rating

  • accuracy of material

  • quality

  • platform to watch it on

These are just a few of the topics reviews and recommendations can be found in.

TV shows

There is an abundance of tv shows out there across a wide variety of platforms. Some are obviously better than others. I have done the hard work of navigating through these shows to find the ones that are the least biased and most informational. As a high school educator I am never afraid to show a cartoon or two in class. They may be big kids but they are still kids at heart (and who doesn't love The Magic School Bus every once in a while).
